I am saddened by the news that Jeremy Strode ended his life today. He is  described as a career chef, someone who started in the hospitality industry as a dishwasher at 14 years old.

The Melbourne Wine Room at the George Hotel  was my favourite place for mid-week dining out when he was the chef there. He subsequently relocated to Sydney and opened his own well-regarded restaurant.

I read news of his death here.

The reporting of Jeremy Strode’s passing is noteworthy for the language used.  He “ended his life”. It’s a simple and complete explanation of the circumstances, all that is needed.  Perhaps our thinking is becoming more empathetic when dealing with the tragic circumstances of somebody ending their own life. I still don’t think we can explain or understand that decision when it is made, inexplicable. We are talking though and the quality of the conversations is more informed. Reporting without demonising or blaming the individual is a big step up from where we were when I started this blog in 2009. Changes happens, sometimes slowly, sometimes suddenly, and inevitably change happens.
